What is a Torque Multiplier?
A torque multiplier is a device that increases the torque that can be applied by an operator. Because the power output can not exceed the power input, the number of output revolutions will be lower than the number of input revolutions (Torque x rpm = Power) How Handtorque Torque Multipliers Work Handtorque multipliers incorporate an 'epicyclic' or 'planetary' gear train having one or more stages. Each stage of gearing increases the torque applied by a factor of 5, allowing Norbar to offer multipliers in ratios of 5:1, 25:1 and 125:1. In the planetary gear system, torque is applied to the input gear or 'sun' gear. Three or four planet gears whose teeth are engaged with the sun gear therefore rotate. The outside casing of the multiplier, or 'annulus' is also engaged with the planet gear teeth, and would normally rotate in the opposite direction to the sun gear. A reaction arm prevents the annulus from rotating, and this causes the planet gears to orbit around the sun. The planet gears are held in a 'planetary' carrier which also holds the output square drive. Therefore as the planet gears orbit around the sun. the carrier and so the square drive turns. Without the reaction arm to keep the annulus stationary, the output square will not apply torque. Why use a Handtorque Torque Multiplier? Safety - use of long levers can be dangerous. Torque multipliers mean a reduction in the lever length or operator effort by a factor of 5, 25 or 125. Space limitation - the use of a long lever may be impossible due to the available space. Accuracy - torque will be applied most accurately when it is applied smoothly and slowly. Torque multipliers enable this by removing much of the physical effort from the tightening task. Pneutorque Applications The smooth and continuous torque output of the Pneutorque makes these tools suitable for a wide range of bolting and non-bolting applications. Bolting
Pneutorques are ideally suited for tightening and untightening bolts of up to 6" diameter. The following is just a small selection of applications: Non-bolting Whenever a high continuous torque is needed, Pneutorques can be used as the power source. Typical applications include: Electrotorque Multipliers What is an Electrotorque?
The Electrotorque uses the same range of gearboxes as the Pneutorque, but exchanges the air motor for a robust, purpose built 48 Volt DC electric motor. An Electrotorque consists of the tool head (motor and gearbox) and a separate transformer and controller built into one box. Transformer/Controllers come in 110 Volt and 240 Volt versions which must be specified at the time of ordering. The Controller will deliver the correct current to the tool for it to stall at the required torque. All that the operator has to do is enter the required torque onto the digital display on the controller. No graphs are needed to set the tool because the current versus torque parameters are contained within the controller. In use, the Controller will act as a torque monitor. However. it should be noted that the Controller is actually measuring current and converting this to torque using a factor pre-set at the time of calibration on Norbar's test joint. As with all power tools, the output will vary on different joints depending on how 'hard' or 'soft' they are. Precise results on any joint can be achieved by combining the tool with a torque transducer and display instrument. Why use Electrotorque? Electrotorque has some important advantages over pneumatic tools: 1. The tool will run at full speed wherever it is set within it's operating range. By contrast, air tools slow down as air pressure is reduced for lower torques. 2. The Electrotorque avoids the air exhaust associated with some pneumatic tools and is even quieter in operation than the Pneutorque. 3. Operating costs of an electric tool will be lower than pneumatics due to the cost of generating compressed air. The Electrotorque is designed to work with all of the accessories and options designed for the Pneutorque range. Summary Of Electrotorque Advantages Powerful 2.5 kW motor for excellent performance. Accurate torque control, repeatable to +/-3%. Motor is just 48 V for operator safety. Bi-directional operation with torque control in one direction (full power reverse) or in both directions. Clean and quiet operation. No air exhaust and low operator fatigue. Operating costs lower than pneumatic tools. Hydraulic Nutrunner
With the introduction of the Hyspan hydraulic torque multiplier to Norbar's product range we now are able to offer a tool that is compatible with every industrial power source. Although primarily developed for subsea and mining applications, the Hyspan is ideally suited for environments where the use of compressed air or electricity is not permitted or not possible. The robust reversible hydraulic motor has been designed to operate at under 2000 psi. Tool can be powered directly from vehicle and mining prop hydraulic systems. Torque control is achieved by the adjustment of the oil flow compared to specific settings taken from a flow versus torque graph supplied with each tool. Models available for almost every bolting application up to 100,000 N.m (73,500 ft.lbs.)
